The Wide Angle Youth Media Photo exhibit opened with a reception on April 23, 2024, at Hotel Revival in Mount Vernon. WAYM high school students took all the photographs during their fall and spring photography classes.

Sydney Allen led the students to explore portraiture as a response to an overall generational desire to be looked at less while remaining visible. The photos on view were the result of an exercise in which students were asked to make portraits without using the face or facial identifiers.

The images represent the Wide Angle cohort’s budding, innovative, and creative nature. The evocative portraits challenge viewers to interrogate their conceptions of the portraiture genre.

Through media arts education, Wide Angle Youth Media collaborates with and amplifies the voices of Baltimore youth to engage audiences across social divides. Their programs inspire creativity and instill confidence in young people, supporting them to navigate school, careers, and life.

If you missed seeing the images at Hotel Revival, the touring exhibition will be at Red Emma’s from July 9 through August 4, 2024. (Teri Henderson)
